How to Build a After School!

January is all about Hawaii at After School.  Students will be learning interesting information about the state of Hawaii including Hawaiian customs, cuisine, history, and...all about volcanoes!

Hawaii emerged from the sea over one million years ago! The island was forged by the power of volcanoes. Hawaii's main volcanoes are "shield" volcanoes, which means the eruptions produce fluid lava that flows to form sloping shield-like mountains. There are currently three active volcanoes on the island of Hawaii; they include Maunaloa, Kilauea, and Loihi.

You can find more information about Hawaii at

The After School students took some time to learn about these volcanoes and try their hands at building their own. They have provided the following pictures illustrating the steps they took.

After School OP Art

Op Art, also known as optical art, is a style of art that uses optical illusions. Op art uses patterns and contrast to "trick" they eye into seeing movement, flashing patterns, or hidden images.

These pieces were created by After School students in grades 2 to 5.  Take a look, but not for too long! You might get dizzy!

Gingerbread House Time

The Gingerbread House nutrition activity has become an After School tradition. The students are tasked with creating a gingerbread house display. They must work together to develop a theme for their creation, assemble the house, and promote it to Mrs. Mearkle. The groups' displays are judged by Mrs. Mearkle and After School staff and the winning group enters a county competition with the other After School sites. This year's creations were unique and the groups worked together very well.

Service Learning Project - Operation Christmas Child

The After School program at BE participated in a service learning project to fill shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. This program collects and ships shoe boxes filled with goodies to children in underprivileged countries during the holidays. The After School students collected donated items for one week in November and spent one day after school to fill the shoe boxes and get them ready to ship. The After School students filled a total of 45 shoe boxes and donated $50 towards shipping costs! Great job to all the After School students!!

After School Nutrition

Every month the After School students are visited by Barbara Mearkle from the Penn State Cooperative Extension.  Mrs. Mearkle educates the students on a variety of nutritional issues including: food groups, following recipes, portion size, reading labels, healthy choices and exercise.

In addition to the lesson, the students are able to participate in activities. Mrs. Mearkle works with the students to prepare a healthy meal/snack that they get to eat that night! There are more opportunities throughout the month to prepare other snacks from the recipes Mrs. Mearkle provides.

Texas Rodeo...BE Style!

During the month of October, the After School students learned about the great state of Texas. At the end of the month, the students celebrated with a rodeo...BE style! The rodeo activities included making cowboy hats and bandanas, creating badges, and a photo booth full of fun western props.  The rodeo was finished with some good ol' walking tacos and apple blossom punch! Yee Haw!!

Texas Trivia Night

In October the After School students continued their quest to learn about the United States of state at a time. Texas was the focus this month. Students learned about the state's geography, history, symbols, and people. Once again, the learning adventure culminated in Texas Trivia Night. The competing teams were Cowboys vs. Cowgirls. Congratulations to the cowgirls for lassoing in a victory!

New Game at After School

Are those tennis rackets? Is that a tennis ball?  Wait...he's running the bases, must be baseball!  Yes and's Tennis-Baseball...a new game created by After School. Students hit a tennis ball served from the pitcher with a tennis racket.  Then they run the bases...backwards (3rd, 2nd, 1st, home)!!  Why??  Because it's fun!!  The pictures are proof enough!!  Check them out!

Pennsylvania Trivia Night

During the month of September, the After School students have spent time learning about our home state of Pennsylvania.  The students have learned about the state's geography, history, early settlers, famous people, and symbols.  All of the learning, culminated in an epic Pennsylvania Trivia Night!  It was the Pittsburgh Steelers vs. the Philadelphia Eagles!  In the end, the winning team was...the Eagles!!

In October, we visit the great state of Texas!!

Remembering and Honoring 9/11

The BE After School students spent time learning about the events of 9/11 and honoring those people who lost their lives that day.  The students participated in a discussion about what happened and why, along with what effects are still seen today.  The students created individual quilt squares to honor the heroes who helped that day.  The quilt squares were assembled together into a large quilt and displayed in the cafeteria.
